When we duplicate an artifact, we must have in mind a clear idea of whether the finished product should appear new, or aged. If we are to make it appear aged, matching the existing, usually only one or two mold generations are required. If it is to appear as new, careful work on the existing component and several molds will undoubtedly be required.

•     First we apply a sealer if necessary (usually a type of varnish or enamel).
•     Then, after that cures sufficiently, we apply a mold release. (the composition depends on the substrate)
•     Followed by application of rubber and plastic
•     Finally, the mold is removed and brought to our shop for re-dressing.

After we remove the mold, the original will have a glossy finish, and be slippery. We cannot paint over this.
