There are a few considerations to keep in mind when choosing paint colors...
- When you select a paint color, be sure to hold a sample in the room
where you intend it to be used. Allow the room's lighting to fall on the
sample, note the difference between electric lighting and natural light.
- The sample you use must be of paint, not a random object.
- Be sure the sample is flat..
- Natural and translucent objects have depth in their color that require a complex process
to duplicate. If you are unaware of this limitation, you certainly are not
interested in having this process performed. It is not inexpensive.
- Go to a home center to pick a color from their palette. this is why the
palette exists. It is provided freely to the home center so that it may reach you.
- Compare the sample to the furniture in the room, look for unpleasant
contrasts.
- Don't forget to select a color for the ceiling, compare the wall color to
the ceiling color... even if the ceiling is white.
- Contemplate the color of the flooring and how it will relate to the walls
and furniture.
- Select a finish, and have that finish on your final sample
- Remember the flatter the finish, the lighter it appears, the glossier, the
harsher the shadows and reflections.
- Gloss paint has more depth
- Gloss paint is easier to clean
- Flat paint will help to eliminate shadows by diffusing light
- Textured paint and faux finishes cannot be cleaned, and therefore should
not be touched by small hands
- Consider using wainscot to accentuate and protect faux finishes
- Consider using wall vinyl and chair rail or border in place of wainscot
