Metal RoofsMetal roofs are chosen for their self-cleaning nature. This is a great asset on large sloped roofs. Typical applications include ranches, agricultural buildings, warehouses, motels and homes in high-snow-load areas, and remote cabins. The most common today is standing seam, although flat seam is seen on cupolas, towers and dormers.
Tin and Zinc roofs, although once popular, are now rarely seen. The chief reason for the elimination of zinc roofs is their flammability. Some metals such as zinc, aluminum, and magnesium do burn, and when they do, it is with an extreme heat. This obviously complicates matters for emergency services. Therefore, although these unique roofs are often repaired for historical reasons, new installations are relatively non-existent.
Metal roofs do require maintenance, Regular painting is required. The paint must be an epoxy or oil-based. Metal roofs must be protected from the acids in the wood decks that often support them. The underside of metal roofs must be kept devoid of moisture. At certain angles, standing seam metal roofs may develop an annoying hum as wind blows over them. Rain- and hail-storms can be disquieting in houses with insufficient insulation. Snow has a tendency to build up overnight and slide off unexpectedly in heavy, ice-laden sheets during the day. Snow-jacks are often employed above areas where foot traffic is likely or delicate landscaping is present.
